Hello. I'm Sean Hoban, a graduate student in Biology at the University of Notre Dame. I would like to be more involved in science education in the South Bend community. Both my parents and my sister are teachers, so it must be something in our genes! I've attend several workshops that have really inspired me and taught me a lot: the ISTEM 2009 workshop in South Bend, the AIBS 2009 training workshop at Notre Dame, and the Botany 2007 Innovaitons in Education workshop in Chicago. A book that I recently read that was very inspiring and informative was John Janovy's short book Teaching in Eden. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in active hands on learning- it has many suggestions for challenging and reqarding activities that will connect students and teachers in the learning experience. As for my teaching activities, I have some experience teaching topics in ecology, evolution, plant science, conservation, and genetics at Notre Dame. I would be especially interested in helping to set up field trips, design single topic lectures, or build a unit on one of these topics. I also would like to help connect teachers with resources that I know of at the University of Notre Dame, Saint Marys College, or regional or state environmental organizations.
